If the word "atlas" takes you back to your childhood, idly flipping the pages of what then seemed like a gigantic tome and wondering where countries like Swaziland were, a new release from German publisher gestalten will alas not be a trip down memory lane. Because Around the World: The Atlas for Today would seem to live up to its title by opting for a collection of snappily-designed infographics that goes beyond the academic to provide a more engaging sense of the world in which we live. The news isn't all good and in fact some of it is downright depressing, when dealing with issues related to our impact on the planet. But the overall breath of its coverage and clearly-written text, coupled with the quality of the illustrations, makes this ambitious undertaking a worthy successor to the atlases of our youth. And if you really need to know where Swaziland is, well, you've always got Google Maps.
