I love this concept i think is one of the best from the brief,
i would like to suggest one more black and fit to center the heart (still on top)
i mean (close the shape)

As for your suggestion, i've tried it the way your saying but it doesn't look good for one reason. Closing the zoom shape will ruin the idea.
The idea is that 2 parts of the lens (2 half black heart shape) became one piece, one part reflecting 180 degree and commingled with the other part to form a heart shape. Visually if you separate the heart in 2 pieces and you set them like the other 4 black pieces of the zoom, it will form an complete and closed lens ;)
